Disclaimer: I do not and never will own Torchwood or the characters within.
Rating: PG13
Warning: Language
Characters: Ianto Jones, Jack Harkness
Note: Written for the 2011 Advent Challenge. Prompt #1 taken from the 2010 prompt list.
Author’s Note: Tenth in the series that started in Cold … this is not how I originally planned to use this prompt… I had someone else in mind for the bleeding thing… and because Saturday was not one I wish to revisit, chapter 10 is late and short and chapter 11 is early and short because I’m doing them both now and hoping the rest of Sunday stays good…
Summary: December is starting off unseasonably cold. Torchwood has one dead alien and another one missing. There’s also the sudden disappearance of Cardiff’s rats.
In this chapter Jack dies Red The gunshot was loud and echoed through the cellar. Jack didn’t hear Gwen’s shouted curse as she stumbled through the derelict cottage back to the demolished stairway. She sighed when she stared down at the sight of him. He lay crumpled, the blood seeping through the snow around his head like a red halo. “You idiot,” she muttered, even as she realised why he had done it. She knew it wouldn’t be long before he revived and there was nothing she could do to help, so she stood and waited for the smothered gasp of his resurrection. “You idiot,” she repeated loudly to him as soon as his eyes opened. “”Hey Gwen,” Jack slurred before blinking rapidly. “I can see!” “Yes, well, that was the whole point of it wasn’t it,” she replied. Jack sat up and brushed his hair straight over the closing wound. He groaned as he looked down at himself. “Ianto is not going to be pleased.” The tie he had used as a blindfold had slipped down around his neck and had been lying in the blood-stained snow. It was now damp with blood and leaving red streaks on his shirt and coat. He stood up slowly. His head hurt but the effects of the explosion were gone. He picked up the body bag and looked up at Gwen. “You finding anything up there?” “No,” she shook her head. “Place is absolutely gutted and the snow just keeps falling straight through the holes in the roof.” “You said the scanner said we’re close to whatever it is. Have you looked outside?” “No.” “You start that and I’ll be up to join you once I’ve got our dead friend stowed away.” “Okay,” Gwen gave him a small nod and disappeared from view. Jack turned to the small body in the corner. Snow was piling up under the holes in the floor above from the continual silent fall and time was passing. Jack knew they had to start hurrying up. The longer the snow fell, the more danger there was of becoming trapped. The longer they were without contact the more the others would worry and he didn’t think they’d stay and wait in the Hub for him. And the longer it took them to find the source … Jack moved quicker.
