Black Ice

“Jack!” Gwen called, her voice high and urgent as she appeared. “Oh! Owen! What are you doing here?”

Owen shrugged and waved a dismissive hand. “Long story.”

Jack shook his head. “Did you find anything?”

“Yes, you should come see this,” Gwen said as she frowned at them before turning and leading them to the rear of the cottage.

The garden was a neglected, overgrown mess looking as derelict as the cottage but it was immediately obvious what had caught Gwen’s eye.  At the end of the garden stood what had obviously once been a well. Now it was a crumpled pile of stone and wood but it was the ice that surprised them. Glassily smooth it coated everything around the well. Stone, grass, plants and weeds – all appeared covered in thin ice that made them shine in light.

“There’s something in that well,” Gwen told them. “The ice is very slippery but I got close and there is something in there that’s glowing.”

“Glowing?” Owen snarked. “Things always glow.”

“Or have big shiny buttons,” Jack agreed absently as he stepped cautiously on the ice. He nearly lost his footing and stepped back. “Slippery is right. How did you get over there, Gwen?”

“Hands and knees,” Gwen replied ruefully holding up her hands to show her ruined gloves and then pointed at the ragged knees of her jeans.

Jack thought for a moment. “There’s some plastic sheeting in the SUV. Get that and we’ll use it to slide our way to the well and have a look. Maybe some rope as well if we can get down to whatever’s there.”

As soon as they had the plastic sheeting, Jack laid it out and placed it on the ice.  He knelt on it and propelled himself over the ice, using the rope as a buffer between his hands and the ice. It was tricky trying to stay in a straight line and he was grateful he didn’t have far to go. Grass crackled and broke beneath him. everything was frozen solid.

The stones of the well were impossibly cold and he avoided touching them as much as he could. He kept the plastic between himself and the ice  as he finally got close enough to peer into the well.

Glowing. Whatever it was it was definitely glowing. He stretched a hand over the well and frowned at the warmth he could feel. He moved his arm around, testing the air and found the heat was limited to a small six inch column that went upwards. He secured the rope and dropped it into the well.

“The rope’s long enough,” he called back to the others. “And I will just about fit so I’m going to go and get it. Be ready with a containment box.”

“Okay,” Gwen nodded.

“Owen, if anything goes wrong. Drive to where you can get reception again and let Ianto and Tosh know what we’ve found. Ianto knows some tech that will get it and me out of there if necessary.”

“It better not be necessary,” Owen told him flatly and Jack grinned.

He grabbed hold of the rope , manoeuvring himself into position before he suddenly slipped on the ice and fell into the well.

Oh, famous last words, Owen...

Why do I think this isn't going to be that easy?

Ooops! Hope Jack hasn't managed to break his neck falling in like that. It's not helping their situation.

The mystery grows ever deeper, but they're Torchwood, they'll figure it out - if they can fish Jack out of the well.
