Summary:   December is starting off unseasonably cold. Torchwood has one dead alien and another one missing. There’s also the sudden disappearance of Cardiff’s rats.

In this chapter Jack has another use for Ianto’s ties, Ianto keeps sleeping and the light goes out for Jack

Power Outage

Ianto is not dreaming.

He knows that as long frozen muscles twitch and ice puddles around him. Wherever he is, whatever he is, he’s not human. He discovers a tail as he monitors the ever-increasing awareness. His fur bristles in slow shivered waves.

There is heat somewhere. Heat that has woken him – it – them.

He hears them breathe. He is not alone.

His eyes were watering, tears soaking into the lining of his coat. Jack’s ears were straining hard waiting for the click that should signal the light going out. The skin around his eyes was itching and it was hard to resist rubbing at them. He didn’t know what damage – if any – the bright light had caused and until he heard that second click he wasn’t able to find out.

He thought hard and fast and then slipped a hand into his coat pocket hoping what he needed was still there. His fingers wrapped around silk and he smiled.

Ianto’s second-best tie.. He’d shoved it in his pocket as they’d run out that morning when he’d wanted to change Ianto’s mind about which tie the Welshman should wear. Jack had lost that argument, but now he had the tie in his hands and it took only a moment to tie it around his head as a makeshift blindfold.

Ianto was definitely going to have words about the now twisted tie, Jack thought, but Jack felt sure Ianto wouldn’t be too upset once Jack pointed out that his other idea had involved desecrating his greatcoat.

Jack shifted his coat, slipping his arms out of the sleeves and placing it over his head. He took a tentative step towards where he thought the Coelsi was.

“Jack! Jack!” Gwen’s loud call sent several echoes bouncing around and he stopped moving.

“Stay there Gwen! I’m going to try and get that box and then try to turn it off,” he yelled back. “But you won’t be able to see it!” she protested.

“I’ll manage.” Hopefully he added.

With slow steps he headed toward what he hoped was the corner of the room arms outstretched and stretching out his foot in a small sweep after every step.

It took a while before his foot bumped into something soft. Jack knelt down quickly and with slow gently movements he ran his hand over the dead.

Two legs, one arm and dried blood. The Coelsi. It was ‘definitely’ dead as Owen would say.  Jack kept searching and finally his fingers touched metal.

Carefully Jack brushed his fingers over the smooth sides of cool metal. There were several raised lines on one side that Jack was unable to decipher. He traced the lines and found several buttons that tempted him greatly. It was only when he found one button less raised than the others that he gave into temptation and pressed it.

A rapid set of clicks echoed.

“Jack! What did you do?” Gwen shouted.

“I don’t know. Is the light off?”

“No! It’s flickering really fast though.”

“I’m going to try again,” Jack told her. “Let me know if anything changes.”

“Will do!”

He pressed the closest button.

The box exploded.

Ianto can sense the others. They know he’s there but they’re ignoring him.

They have no words. There is only need.

The heated time will be brief which means so will life.

Unless the cold returns.

There's something both terrifying and hilarious about Jack, blindfolded, randomly pressing buttons on a box, and then having it explode. I both laughed and gasped at the same time. It was a very confusing moment. Can't wait for the next installment!

I am extremely intrigued by this. Ianto is channeling, and Jack goes boom! What a chapter!

Ooops, I suspect that was the wrong button, Jack. On the other hand, the light might be out now! Of course, you'll have to buy Ianto a new tie - or maybe several...

So what creature is Ianto channeling? One of the new sort of rat maybe? His empathy is usually a useful tool, but right now it seems more of a liability since it's incapacitated him.

Isn't Jack the one who always tells everyone else not to press the shiny buttons?
